John McVeigh |
Since his October 2008 appearances with Music of the Baroque under the baton of Jane Glover in “Night Music,” tenor John McVeigh returned to the Gran Teatro del Liceu and Teatro Real as Endimione in Martin y Soler’s L’Abore di Diana and Metropolitan Opera for Il Tabarro. Other highlights include Handel’s Messiah with the Seattle Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and San Diego Symphony; the Celebrant in Bernstein’s Mass with Virginia Arts Festival; Monteverdi’s Vespers at Théâtre du Châtelet; Handel’s Elijah with Calgary Philharmonic; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Grant Park Music Festival.
Specializing in classical and baroque repertoire, John McVeigh has sung Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with Glimmerglass Opera and Austin Lyric Opera, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with New York City Opera and Houston Grand Opera, Ferrando in Così fan tutte with Austin Lyric Opera, and Arbace in Idomeneo with Santa Fe Opera. In addition, he joined Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques as Ozia in Mozart’s rarely performed Betulia Liberata and sang Marzio in Mitridate at Grenada’s Festival Internacional de Música y Danza. He has performed Traetta’s Ippolito ed Aricia and Antigona with Opéra de Montepellier and the Théâtre du Châtelet; Partenope at the Göttingen Handel Festpiele, Glimmerglass Opera and New York City Opera; the title role in Acis and Galatea with Glimmerglass Opera and the Detroit Oratorio Society; Ariodante at Gran Teatre del Liceu, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and de Vlaamse Opera; and Rameau’s Platée and Handel’s L’Allegro with the Mark Morris Dance Group.
Equally at home with contemporary music, John McVeigh has appeared as the Novice in Britten’s Billy Budd with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Genoa’s Teatro Carlo Felice, and Houston Grand Opera. He joined Metropolitan Opera as Little Bat in the company’s first production of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, and created the role of Will Tweedy in the world premiere of Cold Sassy Tree at Houston Grand Opera.
On the concert stage, John Mc Veigh has performed as soloist in many large-scale works, including Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Minnesota Orchestra and Houston Symphony; Mozart’s Requiem with the Colorado Symphony; Messiah with the symphonies of Phoenix, Milwaukee, Austin, Minnesota Orchestra, at Carnegie Hall with the Masterworks Chorus, and at the Washington National Cathedral with the Cathedral Choral Society; Mozart’s Mass in C Minor and Handel’s Israel in Egypt with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; Bach’s Mass in B Minor with Milwaukee Symphony; Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Detroit and Utah symphonies; and Haydn’s Harmoniemesse with Handel and Haydn Society.
