In 2011–12, baritone Stephen Powell returns to the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in Bach’s Mass in B Minor, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the St. Matthew Passion, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Messiah, and Pittsburgh Opera as Germont in La Traviata, and makes his debut with Atlanta Opera as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor. His 2010–11 season included re-engagements with San Francisco Opera as De Guiche in Cyrano de Bergerac, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Rachmaninoff’s Spring Cantata, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in Fauré’s Requiem. He made his debuts with Cincinnati Opera in the title role of Rigoletto, Montreux Festival in Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, Minnesota Opera as Germont, Palm Beach Opera as Scarpia, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. He also appeared in the Brahms Requiem with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, returned to the Philadelphia Orchestra in Carmina Burana, and sang Messiah with the San Francisco Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recent highlights include Ford in Falstaff with Pittsburgh Opera, Mahler’s Das Knaben Wunderhorn at the Aspen Music Festival, the Brahms Requiem with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Cathedral Choral Society, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater with Rome’s Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Messiah with the Huddersfield Choral Society and the Baltimore Symphony, Dvořák’s Te Deum with the Cathedral Choral Society, Carmina Burana with the Cincinnati, Atlanta, and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras and at the Aspen Music Festival, Scarpia with the Minnesota Orchestra, the roles of Germont and Sharpless with Los Angeles Opera, Germont with San Francisco Opera, Mahler’s Das Klagende Lied with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Haydn’s The Creation with Rochester Philharmonic, and Miller in Luisa Miller at the Cincinnati May Festival.

Additional appearances include his San Francisco Opera debut as Sharpless, Ford in Falstaff with New York City Opera, Riccardo in I Puritani with Washington Concert Opera, Germont with Arizona Opera, and Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Hawaii Opera Theatre, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Stephen Powell has sung under the batons of Paavo Järvi, Andrew Litton, Charles Dutoit, Leonard Slatkin, Edo de Waart, Rossen Milanov, Christopher Seaman, David Robertson, James Conlon, Christoph Eschenbach, and Michael Tilson Thomas, among many others. His recordings include Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, recently released on RCA with Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, and Bach’s Magnificat with Boston Baroque.
