Lisa Saffer
SOPRANO

Soprano Lisa Saffer’s recent appearances include Haydn’s The Creation at the Berkshire Choral Festival and Handel’s L’Allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, both conducted by Jane Glover; Dejanira in Weill’s Royal Palace at the Bard Summer Music Festival; Messiah with the Philadelphia Orchestra; and Hindemith’s Die Serenaden with the Boston Chamber Music Society. She last appeared in Music of the Baroque’s December 2010 performances of the Christmas Oratorio.

Lisa Saffer has performed a wide range of opera repertoire, including contemporary works such as Birtwhistle’s Punch and Judy and Morton Feldman’s Neither for Netherlands Opera, Hans Werner Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers at the Concertgebouw and at Tanglewood, and Janáçek’s Cunning Little Vixen for Houston Grand Opera. She was particularly acclaimed for her portrayal of Marie in Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten with ENO, Opera Bastille, and New York City Opera.

The soprano has appeared with Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass, San Diego Opera, and Barcelona’s Gran Teatro del Liceu, and has also performed at the International Handel Festival in Göttingen. Acclaimed for her insightful characterizations, she won the Royal Philharmonic Music Society’s award for best vocal performance in the title role of Berg’s Lulu at the English National Opera (ENO), and was also nominated for an Olivier Award—London’s equivalent of Broadway’s Tony.

On the concert stage, Lisa Saffer has performed James Primrosch’s From a Book of Hours/Rilke and John Harbison’s Four Psalms with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges with the Cleveland Orchestra and Pierre Boulez at Carnegie Hall; David del Tredici’s Ecstatic Alice with the Atlanta Symphony and Robert Spano; and numerous works with Amsterdam’s Schoenberg Ensemble.

Lisa Saffer can be heard on recordings on Harmonia Mundi USA, Virgin Classics, New World Records, DGG, and Telarc; on a three-disc set of Berg’s Lulu (Chandos); and in Philip Glass’s Orphée on the composer’s label, Orange Mountain Music. She teaches voice at her alma mater, the New England Conservatory of Music.
